Real Steel Series Round 5

17th-18th June '06

Sunday...

The Wild Bunch consisted of 6 cars running on an 8 car ladder, so there would be three pairings in the first round with the top qualifier vying for a bye in the second round. We were on the other half of the ladder meaning that to win the event we would need to win three rounds straight. The first round ran at twenty five past one and we paired with Phil Sweeney who had spent most of the weekend struggling with a misfire. but, you never know what's going to happen in drag racing, so we lined up for the race.

The final would be a repeat all-female, all-altered showdown between Sarah Howells in Bernie's "Destiny's Angel" and Helen and the Belle. The dial-in's were within a tenth of each other and it was with stomachs in mouths that we waited for the go signal.

Sarah cut a good light and nosed into the lead off the line, it was a close run all the way down the track but at the finish line, Sarah kept ahead and crossed the line just 0.06seconds ahead of the Belle. Congratulations to Sarah and all her support for a well run race.

Sarah and the chief starter, Ian.

Sharky gets Twisted at last!! Cedric led us straight to it!!

A well earned second place.

With a dial in of 13.5 for Phil and 9.6 for Helen there was a 4s stagger on the tree before Helen got the green light. Phil was still a bit off pace and Helen nipped through into the second round...

Quarter past four saw us paired against Roy Wilding in his glorious "Chariot of Fire". Roy has been extremely consistent over the last few events and has also been hitting some good reactions, so we knew it could go either way. With a 1.8s stagger at the tree Roy blasted off into the distance, but with luck on our side and a race day best reaction from Helen (0.086) we were in the final.

This is what a difference of 0.06 seconds looks like at the finish line, when travelling at 140mph

Do you think they are happy?

So, we had gained a great second place and managed to win a spot prize for the "Best Reaction" and thanks to stand in crew member Steve, we had also won the "Best Appearing Team and Car"

As usual, our thanks go to the whole of the Wild Bunch for making it such a fantastic weekend, thanks to the Santa Pod crew for preparing a great track over the weekend and many thanks to all the shouts of support and "good luck" wishes from the on-lookers in the pits.

Don't forget to check out the video clips linked in the above photo's, and we'll see you next time out at a drag strip near you!

p.s. Anybody who has not been "Twisted" yet, had better watch out.. P&P are on the move again.
