Wild Bunch Series Round 1 & Real Steel Series Round 3

13th-14th May '06

Sunday. After last nights rain we were pleased to find the track drying pretty fast and The Wild Bunch were keen to get going and squeeze in four rounds if at all possible. So, we headed off to the staging lanes ready for the off. We queued up whilst the final track prep took place, glueing and sledding, wuth the buzz of excitement filled the air. There are so many people fulfilling their dreams at these events that it always makes me smile when I look around.

Guess where we're going?

With a pause in the racing to let the motors cool down and the jaw action catch up, The Wild Bunch gathered for some light reading. D.A.S.H racing had been over to Oz earlier in the year and met up with the crew from Cruzin magazine. We took the opportunity to catch up on the last few issues and found that it's a great mag covering the whole range from Rod's and Yanks to a big Nostalgia Drag scene.

Once that was finished we headed down to fire up for what was to be the last pass of the day. this was to be our closest run of the day and we hit 9.88 only 3 hundredths off the dial in, much better.....

Ready to rumble!

Another piece of girl on girl action....

At the "Test 'n' Tune" style events The Wild Bunch competes by selecting a dial-in time for the day and then averaging your error from the that time over the number of competitive rounds. After our spread of times from yesterday, we dialled in at 9.85. Our experimentation with tyre pressures had come to a conclusion and we hoped for a reasonable level of consistency from our Belle. We cracked off the first run and hit 9.96 at our now regular 134mph.

Time came for the second round at about half two and this time we managed to line up against Sarah Howells in Bernie Nichols' "Destinys Angel" The Angel is a smidgen quicker then The Belle so it was great fun to watch them blast down the track together, with Helen pushing the Belle to keep up and hitting a weekend best of 9.77 at 135mph just under 2 tenths behind Sarah.

Exactly what it says on the tin.

By now, there was a large queue in the staging lanes and with a few delays through the day coupled with a late oil down, the racing drew to a close. The Wild Bunch teams packed up their wagons and then eagerly headed over to the Backdraft bus to find out who had won. With 19 teams competing at the event it was going to be a close competition! We'd worked out our average to be about 0.075 off our dial-in which was pretty respectable for us, but we were in with some pretty tight teams and it was not to be!

Congratulation to Crazy Chris and Sarah for winning joint first place, Roy for a superb 3rd and Mr Steven's on his 4th place (he's never far from the front! and geez is he picking up those launches with that blower!)

We were chuffed to win our second "Best Altered" trophy of the year (see Mr Bolts trophy courtesy of Elaine Southworth), although we were both pleased and teased to find that we'd managed to come fifth, just out of the points! So, now we're really fired up for the next event on June 10th/11th. Join us there and find out what it takes to run fast, have fun and smile wide with The Wild Bunch.
