The Summer Nationals
Wild Bunch Round 3, Real Steel Round 5
Sunday 26th June '05
The two qualifying rounds on Saturday gave us a great insight into the new motor, all was in good shape but we needed at least one more qualifying run to try and establish a dial in. Both passes on Saturday had been run with Helen directed to squeeze on the throttle to max after half track and this didn't give us any consistency. Luckily a third qualifying round was to be run on Sunday morning, so the team decided to limit the throttle pedal travel, but allow Helen to use all the available throttle for the whole pass.
Strapping one girl to the other.. (oooo missus!)
The rounds passed quite quickly and The wild Bunch came to their final qualifying round at about half past ten. Without much idea of how much the limited pedal travel would affect the new motor, we struggled for a qualifying dial in and chose 11.90
Waiting for the track to clear.....
A great looking Bunch.
....and she's off!!
Helen and the Belle flying down the track, front wheels barely kissing the tarmac..
With Helen instructed to use full throttle for the whole pass she nailed it from idle off the line, the Belle hooked up and ran straight, at half track she looked like she was really moving and the speed with which the car ripped down the track hinted to what was about to become her new PB.... when the lights lit up at the finish line, they told the story some of us already felt.. 9.47 at 137mph. Helen had blitzed past the 11s and 10s to mid 9s in a single pass. This was Team Twisted history in the making.
Back in the pit's the Bunch were quick to congratulate us on our performance and the pits buzzed with excitement. We thought a 9 second run may be on the cards for the end of the year after some tweaking, but the Belle had other ideas!
Back to the reality of the competition and we had broken out by 2.5 seconds which meant we had qualified in 7th place, not good, but we didn't care!
Our first round eliminations against WB40 Wicked Lady, came shortly after 1pm and we dialled in at 9.50. Unfortunately for them The Wicked Lady failed to start and Helen ran on a single, netting 9.67 at 139mph. this was another new PB for top end speed and showed the 9.47 wasn't just a one off.
Big smiles al round from Team Twisted.
A great debut for the new engine, and trophies to boot!
Back to work after the excitement. The Belle doesn't run by herself..
We weren't to be so lucky in the second round as we were drawn against the eventual winner; Tony Smith, whose position as WB1 tells you all you need to know about his consistency. A mid track problem saw Helen come through to an off form 10.0 and saw us out of the competition.
As the results were finalised we had actually achieved third place after we had made the semi-finals, and the team was very pleased to receive the third place trophy along with a "Cockup Trophy" for missing our dial in by a massive 2.5 second breakout!
All in all, a fantastic weekend for the team and a just reward for what had been a busy couple of months proceeding the event.
